There Is No Time for Conflict in the Workplace
It is naive for us to think everyone is going to agree about every little topic, including those on the job site. We all have our own way of thinking and our own idea of how to get things accomplished while on the construction site. However, it is how we handle those differences that determines whether or not a team is successful in accomplishing their goals on a project.
Come Together
When conflict does arise on a construction project, it is important to approach the matter as quickly and professionally as possible in order to best resolve the issue and move forward in completing the goals.
Here are some tips to consider when you are ready to resolve conflict while on the job site.
First, recognize that everyone has a different point of view on things. Therefore, take a moment to see both sides of the situation. Some have been in the construction industry for years, while others who have not been in the business very long have a fresh new idea on how things can be accomplished. While there is a ranking order within any industry, it is important not to “pull rank” when a heated discussion is brought up. This could end up hindering the situation more, instead of helping. For the time being, consider each other equals, and work hard to come to an agreement. There may actually be a good compromise that can help improve the project.
Second, it is important to recognize when a “time-out” is needed. Tempers can easily rise while on the job. Therefore, take a step back and breathe for a few minutes before heading back and discussing a compromise on the situation. Remember, everyone is here for one common goal in the end: to get the job done without sacrificing quality.
