Make Your Health a Priority on the Construction Site
While we teach our children the importance of eating their fruits and vegetables in order to grow into a healthy adult, we have a tendency to put our own health to the side. As a construction worker, it’s vital to keep your health at the forefront to stay safe and productive on the job site.
First, Comes Health
Back pain is the No.1 health complaint among construction workers. Due to the heavy lifting and other requirements placed on workers within the construction industry, the back is usually the first to go, causing many to go on leave from work.
Don’t let this be you. Prevent back pain on the construction site before it begins.
First, consider your options when lifting heavy objects. Is there another worker around who could help you lift the load? What about tools, such as a wheelbarrow or a trolley? Is there any equipment that could help make the load lighter so that not so much weight is placed on your back?
The weight of your tools is also an issue when it comes to back pain. The heavier the tool, the more risk there is to your back. Therefore, use the lightest tool possible for the job you’re assigned on the construction site. If a heavier tool is needed, see if there is someone else who can help you use the equipment so that not all the weight is placed on your back.
In addition, make sure to take breaks throughout the workday in order to give your body—and back—a chance to recharge and rest. Many construction jobs cause strain on your muscles and joints, so it’s vital to give your body the ability to release the stress before another hard job is required.
