Life Tips from a Construction Worker: Part Two
Believe it or not, construction workers have one of the highest eye injury rates of any industry. As a result, it is important to make sure to watch out for any hazards that may cause injury while on the job site, as well as take preventive action each day to keep the eyes safe.
Eye Safety 101
There are a number of reasons why a construction worker’s eyes are in danger of injury on the construction site. For one, particles of dust, metal, cement, etc., can be floating around at various times throughout the workday, depending on the type of project. Even the smallest particle can cause vision problems. A simple scratch from cement or metal from hammering can cause serious vision problems to the point where all vision is lost.
To protect themselves, construction workers must be sure to wear the proper eye gear at all times. Different protective eye gear may be worn at different times depending on the job being worked on. This includes, but is not limited to, prescription safety glasses, clear or tinted goggles, face shields, welding helmets, and some full-face type respirators. Most eye injuries reported by construction workers are the result of proper eyewear not being worn.
Therefore, it is extremely important to make sure no matter what job you are doing, if eye protection is needed—you wear it!
