Don't Give Your Heart Health the Cold Shoulder This Season | Wright Brothers Construction

In Tennessee, you sometimes never know what the temperature is going to be outside. One week the temperatures are below freezing. The next week it could look like spring is here to stay. And all those temperature swings can wreak havoc on our health!

That’s why our team at Wright Brothers Construction wants to offer some tips on how to handle the cold—and keep your heart healthy and strong!

Keep Your Heart Pumping Strong

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both American men and women.

Did you know that when the temperatures begin to dip, the chances of having a heart attack increase? Therefore, it’s important to protect your heart while working outside in cold weather.

Let’s take a look at ways you can boost up your heart health while working in the cooler temperatures this season.

As the temperatures decrease, your resting metabolic rate increases. That’s because your body is losing heat due to the cold temperatures outside, which is why your heart rate is also having to rise—to help keep your internal body temperature around 98.6 degrees.

When this happens, your calorie needs also increase, because your heart is having to work harder, which in turn burns calories more quickly. Which means, if you want to have that hot chocolate during your break on the construction site, go right ahead!

Second, it’s especially important to maintain a regular exercise routine. Fitting in physical activity on most days during the week can help strengthen your heart health. Take that run or walk outside for a win-win—help your heart and allow your body to acclimate to colder temperatures.

Finally, you might also want to switch up your diet this time of year to help your heart meet the demands of colder weather. Foods such as fish, walnuts, oats, eggs, broccoli and avocados can all help support a healthy heart! Therefore, think ahead when packing your lunch and/or snacks with you to bring onto the job site!
